"The Shark"

"Publication date: August, 2009"

This book is a continuation of the "Death of the Phoenix", which tells the story of the beginning of the war and the boy's experiences out at sea.

The Shark continues the story of Kees' remembering his adventures and challenges as the war goes on. Living in his new home with five other families in the same structure, he recalls the events of everyday life as they are under a continues threat of death. Their lives are filled with both horror as well as humor as they try to outsmart their captors.
His mother and his sister and he are transferred from the continually shrinking camp they are interned in, to a century old dilapidated prison. The trip, in a shuttered and boarded train, lasted days and the lack of sanitation food and water took its toll on the prisoners. Their new home in the old prison proved to be far worse than the deadly train ride.
During the early post war days, Kees attempts to reach the far horizon trying to get away from the world he does not fit in. His trips out to sea brings him and his dog Andjing in repeated contact with a tiger shark.
While at home he spends much time with his old friend Nenektua, the old babu, who introduces him to the world of Spirits. Old native beliefs, long before the introduction of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam or Christianity.
She teaches him the meaning of freedom, ownership, truth and responsibility through a multi cultural perspective. The millennia old believes, philosophies and stories are as relevant today as they were then.
