Volume 3

"Liberation"

"Publication date: November, 2009"

This book is a continuation of the "THE SHARK", which tells the story of the last part of the war
and Kees' despair of having to leave the islands to return to Europe.

"Liberation" is the continuation of Volume 2 "The Shark". The story relates Kees' flashbacks of the prison on central Java where his mother, sister and he are interned until the end of the war. The story shows both the cruelty as well as the compassion shown by some prison guards at the risk of their own lives. How prisoners are water boarded to death even after the war was over.
Their struggle against and escape from the terrorists who tried to take advantage of the power vacuum left by the collapse of the Japanese forces. On their way to safe heaven the train is attacked and the survivors must find refuge in fox holes on a bullet riddled beach.
After the end of the war, when nearly nine years old, he is told that he and his sister will have to leave for Europe. Not wanting to leave the islands he is heartbroken and decides to remain forever with his friend the shark in the deep dark waters near the horizon. He takes his canoe out in the dead of night to find his friend. Daylight finds him in the first storm of the season, in a fragile little canoe he tries to follow a tiger shark through ten-foot waves.
In this last volume Kees is forced to face and come to terms with his demons, as he struggles to follow his friend through violent waters.
